Mon Jun 02 01:40:00 UTC 2025: **Gukesh Stuns Carlsen in Norway Chess, Claims First Classical Victory**

**Stavanger, Norway -** World Champion D Gukesh pulled off a stunning upset against Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament on Sunday. The 19-year-old Indian grandmaster secured his first classical victory over the Norwegian former world champion, recovering from a seemingly losing position to capitalize on Carlsen’s late-game errors.

The victory marks Gukesh as only the second Indian player to defeat Carlsen in the tournament, following Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.

While Carlsen dominated the majority of the match, he faltered under pressure, giving Gukesh the opening he needed to secure the win. A visibly frustrated Carlsen reacted to the loss by slamming the chessboard before storming out of the arena. Gukesh, in contrast, celebrated quietly with his coach, Grzegorz Gajewski.

The win propels Gukesh to third place in the Norway Chess standings with 8.5 points, just one point behind co-leaders Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana.

Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna praised Gukesh’s resilience, highlighting his ability to fight back despite a difficult position. “We have to give a lot of credit to Gukesh for his stubbornness and resourcefulness because I think he was aware that he was dead lost for so long. Yet, he kept fighting,” Prasanna stated.

This victory adds intense competition to the remaining rounds of the tournament, making the race for the top spot even tighter. The result will surely motivate Gukesh to push for the lead!
