**Maharashtra Cattle Market Ban Sparks Outrage Ahead of Bakri Eid**

**Mumbai, June 2, 2025** – A circular issued by the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog, the state commission for cow welfare, banning livestock markets from June 3rd to June 8th, 2025, ahead of Bakri Eid, has triggered strong opposition and concerns over potential financial losses for cattle rearers and market committees.

The circular, citing the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, prohibits the slaughter, sale, and transportation of cattle, including bulls and bullocks, regardless of age or health. The commission stated that the ban is necessary to prevent violations of the Act during the Bakri Eid festival.

Prakash Ambedkar, President of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), has condemned the circular, calling it a “harsh step against daily wage farmers” who rely on income from cattle sales during this period. He questioned the authority of the Goseva Ayog to issue such an order and vowed to challenge it.

“Who will compensate for the loss so many are going to face due to this circular?” Ambedkar asked.

APMC officials, while stating they will abide by the circular, acknowledged that such a ban is unprecedented and will disrupt both the market and Bakri Eid rituals, which often involve animal sacrifice. While sheep and goats are not banned, the market closure is expected to lead to advance purchases and inconvenience for many.

The circular has raised concerns about the economic impact on cattle rearers and the potential disruption to religious practices during Bakri Eid. The controversy highlights the complex interplay between animal welfare laws, religious customs, and economic livelihoods in Maharashtra.
