Sun Jun 01 09:37:16 UTC 2025: **Netflix’s ‘The Royals’ Faces Backlash for Stereotypical Depiction of Indian Royal Families**

**New Delhi:** Netflix’s web series, “The Royals,” starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, is facing criticism from members of various erstwhile royal families across India who claim the show trivializes and stereotypes their communities.

Radhikaraje Gaekwad, from the former royal family of Wankaner, is leading the charge, expressing her discontent in an Instagram post titled “The Royal Ignore.” She argues that the show perpetuates outdated stereotypes of royals as being soaked in whiskey and profligacy when in fact they contributed their homes, lands and identities for the creation of a united, democratic country

According to Ms. Gaekwad, modern-day royals are actively involved in running successful businesses, contributing to society, and preserving their heritage.

Other members of royal families, including Yashodhara Ghorpade, former Maharani of Sandur, and Vijayadevi Rane, wife of former Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane, have echoed Ms. Gaekwad’s sentiments, highlighting their contributions to education, healthcare, and cultural preservation.

Another show on JioHotstar, Kull: The Legacy of the Raisingghs, has also been caught in the row for its portrayal of royals.

While some view the series as mere fiction, many royals fear the negative stereotypes it perpetuates will damage their public image and undermine their ongoing efforts to contribute to Indian society.

Diya Kumari, a descendant of the Jaipur royal family and current Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, is a prime example of a royal who has successfully transitioned into modern politics.
