Sun Jun 01 15:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Piastri Victorious in Spanish Grand Prix Amidst Verstappen Controversy

**Barcelona, Spain** – Oscar Piastri of McLaren secured a dominant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, leading from the start and claiming his fifth win of the season. However, the race was overshadowed by a controversial incident involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell.

Verstappen, who initially finished fifth, was handed a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Russell late in the race, ultimately dropping him to 10th position. The incident occurred after a safety car restart, triggered by Kimi Antonelli’s retirement, left Verstappen struggling on hard tires.

The Dutchman made contact with Charles Leclerc as he attempted to defend his position after the safety car. Later, he collided with Russell at Turn Four, leading to the penalty. Replays suggest Verstappen deliberately collided with Russel.

Russell, who finished fourth, expressed his surprise at Verstappen’s actions, stating, “I’ve seen those sort of manoeuvres before on simulator games and go-karting but never in F1. It felt deliberate in the moment.” Former F1 champion Nico Rosberg, commentating for Sky Sports, deemed the incident “extremely unacceptable” and suggested a black flag would have been appropriate. Verstappen has been voted “Driver of the Day”.

Leclerc finished third, benefiting from the late-race drama. Lando Norris secured second place, completing a 1-2 finish for McLaren. Alex Albon also retired from the race.

Piastri’s victory extends his championship lead to 10 points, capping off a dominant weekend for the Australian. “The overall pace was really good and we could turn it on when we needed to,” Piastri said after the race. “Very proud of the work we’ve done this weekend.”
