**Injury-Plagued Fever Fall to Sun, Losing Two Guards in Close Loss**
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever’s woes continue as they suffered an 85-83 loss to the Connecticut Sun Friday night, bringing their record to 0-2 without injured star Caitlin Clark. The game was further marred by injuries to guards Sydney Colson and Sophie Cunningham, leaving the Fever shorthanded.
Colson sustained a left leg injury in the first quarter, while Cunningham, who had stepped up to fill the point guard role, appeared to aggravate a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter. Neither player returned to the game, leaving Coach Stephanie White without crucial ball-handling options.
“It was kind of like a gut punch,” White said of the injuries. Despite the setbacks, the Fever rallied from a 15-point deficit to briefly take the lead in the final minutes. However, Kelsey Mitchell’s missed jumper in the closing seconds sealed the Sun’s victory.
Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 17 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds. The Sun were led by Marina Mabrey who had 26 points.
The loss comes just days after the Fever announced that rookie sensation Caitlin Clark would be sidelined for at least two weeks with a left quad strain. With a depleted roster, the Fever, who began the season with 11 players but finished Friday’s game with just eight, may be eligible to sign temporary replacement players under a seven-day contract.
“It’s hard when you keep losing people and you’ve got to keep trying to piece it together,” said Fever forward DeWanna Bonner. The Fever will look to regroup before their next game against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday.
