Sun Jun 01 04:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Astros Call Up Top Prospect Jacob Melton Amid Injury Woes
**Houston, TX -** The Houston Astros are set to call up outfielder Jacob Melton, the team’s top prospect according to Baseball America, KPRC2’s Ari Alexander reported late Friday. The move comes as the Astros face a mounting injury crisis, particularly in the outfield.
Melton, a 24-year-old left-handed hitter, was Houston’s second-round pick in the 2022 draft. He has impressed at Triple-A this season, batting .254/.371/.508 with a 132 wRC+ in 17 games. Scouts see him as a potentially average offensive player with above-average power and solid bat-to-ball skills.
The timing of Melton’s promotion is crucial for the Astros. With Yordan Alvarez on the injured list, the team has lacked a consistent left-handed bat. Moreover, the outfield is stretched thin. Jake Meyers is currently the only true outfielder on the active roster. Chas McCormick landed on the injured list Friday with an oblique strain. To make matters worse, utility player Zach Dezenzo, who has been filling in at the corners, left Friday’s game with left-hand discomfort and is scheduled for imaging on Saturday.
“With Dezenzo potentially out, it makes plenty of sense for Houston to get a lefty bat back into the lineup and shore up an outfield mix in desperate need of reinforcements by bringing Melton into the fold,” sources close to the team say.
A corresponding roster move to make room for Melton on both the 40-man roster and the active roster has yet to be announced.
