**Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later’ Promises Immersive, Unconventional Take on Rage Virus Apocalypse**
**London, UK** – Fans of the groundbreaking post-apocalyptic thriller ’28 Days Later’ are eagerly anticipating the arrival of ’28 Years Later,’ directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Boyle recently offered a glimpse into the upcoming sequel, promising a film that is both grand in scope and deeply character-driven, while introducing chilling new depictions of the infected.
Boyle emphasized the film’s visual style, utilizing a widescreen format to heighten the unease and velocity of the infected, forcing viewers to constantly scan the environment. While the original film was defined by its raw, digital video aesthetic, ’28 Years Later’ seeks to push boundaries with innovative production techniques, including the use of iPhones – sometimes as many as 20 simultaneously – to capture certain sequences.
One notable innovation is a custom-built rig housing multiple iPhones, offering a “poor man’s bullet time” effect. This allows filmmakers to capture 180-degree perspectives of action scenes, providing audiences with a unique and immersive experience, placing them “inside the scene.”
Boyle revealed that early ideas for the sequel leaned into familiar tropes, such as weaponized viruses, but the pair ultimately decided to explore a more introspective approach, influenced by real-world events like Brexit. The film begins with an isolated island community in the UK, grappling with the infected threat and forced self-reliance.
“It’s challenging, the film. It’s not what you’ll expect at all,” Boyle stated, promising surprises for audiences.
’28 Years Later,’ starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Alfie Williams, is slated for release on June 20. Streaming availability is currently unavailable.
