**London, UK -** Sir Rod Stewart has shared warm recollections of his long-standing friendship with Sir Elton John, calling the “Rocket Man” singer “one of the most generous guys” he’s ever met. In a recent appearance on The Peter Crouch Podcast, the “Maggie May” singer reminisced about their close proximity in the 1970s and their shared experiences, from spending Christmases together to attending Watford FC football matches.
Stewart described how their competitive nature extended beyond the music charts. “It’s been that way since – we both used to live real close to each other in the early 70s in Ascot.” He highlighted the extravagant Christmas gifts they exchanged, humorously recalling how Elton John once gifted him a Rembrandt.
Despite their close bond, Stewart admitted that they don’t see each other as often these days. He suggested that Elton John’s sobriety, along with that of fellow friend Ronnie Wood, might contribute to their lessened contact. “Elton, sometimes, you know, birthdays, but nowhere near how we used to,” he said.
The conversation also turned to their mutual love of football, with Stewart being a renowned Celtic fan and Elton John having a stand named after him at Watford FC’s stadium. Stewart fondly recalled Elton John’s enthusiastic invitations to Watford matches, even after late nights, saying “We’d be up all night doing drugs and things, and then a knock on the door at 10 o’clock in the morning. ‘Come on, Stewart!’And he’d come in, he’s had this top hat on. ‘We’re going to see Watford!'” He playfully added that while Elton John loved the game, his skills were limited.
Stewart’s podcast appearance comes shortly after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Music Awards, where he was surprised by the presence of five of his children.
