**Gaza City – May 28, 2025** – A chaotic aid distribution in Gaza resulted in at least 47 injuries on Tuesday, escalating tensions and criticisms surrounding a U.S.-backed aid system. The incident occurred at a distribution site managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group that has bypassed the traditional UN-led aid delivery framework.

The UN has condemned the GHF’s operations, with officials like Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office in the Palestinian territories, alleging that most of the injured were wounded by gunfire from the Israeli military (IDF). The IDF refuted the claim, stating soldiers only fired warning shots into the air, away from the crowd. A Palestinian medical source reported one death in addition to the injuries.

The incident highlights the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza as the conflict with Hamas enters its 600th day. Palestinians expressed feelings of hopelessness amidst ongoing violence and scarcity of resources. “Six hundred days have passed and nothing has changed. Death continues, and Israeli bombing does not stop,” said Bassam Daloul, a Gaza resident.

The GHF faces accusations of failing to adhere to humanitarian principles. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, labeled the GHF a “waste of resources” and a “distraction from atrocities,” reiterating that the existing UN aid distribution system is adequate. UN agencies and aid groups have specifically criticized the GHF’s use of “secure distribution sites,” arguing it forces displaced people to relocate yet again to survive.

Meanwhile, in Israel, families of hostages held in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 attack are desperate for their return. Hundreds gathered in Tel Aviv, urging the government to prioritize the hostages’ release. Arbel Yehud, a former hostage, warned that Israeli military actions endanger the hostages’ lives. Protesters also blocked roads, calling for a ceasefire to secure the release of the remaining 57 hostages.

Since a ceasefire ended on March 18, 2025, at least 3,924 people have been killed in Gaza, bringing the total death toll to over 54,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
