**Illegal Immigrant Teen Convicted in Colorado Woman’s Death Arrested by ICE**
**AURORA, CO –** A teenager, an illegal immigrant from Colombia, who received a lenient sentence after a fatal wrong-way collision in Aurora, Colorado, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The teen, along with his family, was arrested on May 20th.
The 16-year-old, whose name has been withheld due to his age, was convicted of vehicular homicide in connection to the July 2024 death of 24-year-old Kaitlyn Weaver. He was initially charged with vehicular homicide. He was driving up to 90mph, according to authorities. Despite the serious charge, the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s office agreed to a plea deal, resulting in a sentence of probation and community service.
John Weaver, Kaitlyn’s father, expressed gratitude for ICE’s intervention and the public’s support. “I appreciate ICE taking enforcement action,” he stated.
The case has drawn criticism due to the perceived leniency of the sentence, sparking outrage. According to Weaver family attorney, Matthew Durkin the plea deal was “abhorrent”. Weaver was kept on life support for two days and Weaver’s organs were donated.
The teen will remain in ICE custody pending an immigration hearing. ICE stated that the teen had a pending asylum claim, but that asylum claims do not prevent detention.
This incident underscores the complex intersection of immigration and criminal justice systems, as highlighted by John Weaver: “We had a collision where the immigration system and the criminal justice system collided, and now my daughter’s dead.”
