**New Delhi:** Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has revealed his initial reluctance towards Test cricket, admitting he believed white-ball cricket was his strength. In a recent podcast with teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, Jadeja confessed he “didn’t realise” he would play so many Test matches for India, initially finding the format “a little long” and only suited for the most dedicated players.
However, Jadeja credited two key figures named Mahendra for shaping his successful cricketing journey. He highlighted his childhood coach, Mahendra Singh Chauhan, a former police officer from Jamnagar, for instilling a focus on peak fitness. “My fitness level and fielding skills can be attributed to me running 15-20 kms around Jamnagar,” Jadeja stated, emphasizing Chauhan’s belief that while batting and bowling could be managed, unwavering fitness was crucial.
The other “Mahendra,” former Indian captain MS Dhoni, also played a pivotal role in Jadeja’s career. When asked to describe Dhoni in a single word, Jadeja responded, “There is no one word to describe his greatness. He is on top of everyone.” Jadeja and Ashwin were integral to Dhoni’s strategies both for India and the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
The conversation also touched on former captain Virat Kohli, with Jadeja praising his aggressive mindset, particularly in Test cricket. He emphasized Kohli’s relentless pursuit of taking all 20 opposition wickets, showcasing his unwavering commitment to victory.
