**Chennai to Track Community Dogs with New Tech**
**CHENNAI, INDIA – May 29, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is launching an ambitious project to comprehensively identify and track community dogs within the city limits. The initiative, costing ₹5.20 crore, involves developing a sophisticated software platform and mobile application by a contracted vendor. The system includes implantable Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) microchips for the dogs, allowing for real-time monitoring of their health, sterilization status, and instances of cruelty.
The RFID microchips, conforming to ISO standards and made of biocompatible glass, will be injected into the dogs and contain a unique identification code. For every 2,500 microchips purchased, the GCC will receive an RFID reader.
The new platform will offer a range of features, including:
* Real-time updates on dog locations and health
* Tracking of sterilization records
* Monitoring of cruelty cases
* Dynamic filtering and exportable reports
The application will also integrate with existing GCC pet licensing data, providing a unified system for managing both community and pet dogs. This includes a State-level dashboard, local body dashboards, mobile tools for dog catchers, a public pet licensing portal, and veterinarian access modules.
According to GCC sources, the platform will be hosted on a cloud platform, ensuring accessibility and scalability. A comprehensive training program for all stakeholders will also be provided. The vendor has 90 days to deploy the system, with ongoing maintenance and updates guaranteed for five years.
This project marks a significant step toward improved animal welfare and responsible community dog management in Chennai.
