**NEW YORK (May 28, 2025) -** At the U.S. premiere of “Karate Kid: Legends,” Jackie Chan reflected on the 1984 original’s impact on action movies and his own career. The new film, which unites Ralph Macchio and Chan’s Mr. Han as mentors, stars Ben Wang, the franchise’s first Asian American “Kid.”

Wang expressed optimism about his role, seeing it as a “privilege” to represent his community. While acknowledging the entertainment value of the Miyagi-verse, some, like author Jeff Yang, note the historical lack of significant Asian American representation in the franchise, a “loose, nagging tooth.”

Martial arts grand master Ken Nagayama, who was involved in the original film, recalls the surge in karate interest after its release. Stunt coordinator Steven Ho, while a huge fan of the original, appreciates how “Legends” offers positive representation for a new generation, avoiding negative stereotypes he faced growing up.

The “Twinjas,” young karate experts, praised the inclusion of Asian leads like Simu Liu in “Shang-Chi” and express their own aspirations for acting roles that showcase their martial arts skills. Wang hopes his role in “Karate Kid: Legends” will inspire young Asian Americans to see themselves as heroes, reinforcing the message that “anyone can be the ‘Karate Kid.'”
