**Veteran Akali Leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Passes Away at 89**

Chandigarh – May 29, 2025 – Veteran politician Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a prominent figure in Punjab’s Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has died at the age of 89. Dhindsa passed away on Wednesday evening at a private hospital in Mohali due to age-related health issues, including pneumonia and cardiac complications.

A former Union Minister, Dhindsa served as a Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur and a Rajya Sabha MP for multiple terms. He held portfolios including sports, chemicals, and fertilizers in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Dhindsa was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2019 but later returned the honor in solidarity with farmers protesting the now-repealed farm laws.

Throughout his career, Dhindsa was known for his strong opinions and independent streak within the Akali Dal. He faced expulsion from the party twice after raising questions about its leadership. He even formed his own political outfit, Shiromani Akali Dal (Democrat), which later merged back with SAD before he was expelled again.

Dhindsa’s death has prompted condolences from political leaders across the spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal. Many lauded his dedication to public service and his deep connection to the people of Punjab. He is survived by his wife, son Parminder Singh Dhindsa (also a former minister), and two daughters.
