**Boston, MA** – A U.S. District Judge has extended an order blocking the Trump administration from restricting Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students. Judge Allison Burroughs’ decision follows a lawsuit filed by Harvard after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) threatened to revoke the university’s ability to admit foreign students if it didn’t comply with unspecified administration requirements.
The conflict escalated when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons sent a letter to Harvard, giving the school 30 days to respond to allegations, including fostering antisemitism and violence on campus, and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party. Harvard, in its lawsuit, argues that the DHS failed to adhere to proper administrative procedures, notably omitting the required 30-day response window.
According to Maureen Martin, Harvard’s director of immigration services, the administration’s actions have created an atmosphere of “profound fear, concern, and confusion.” Martin further stated that both domestic and international students have expressed concerns about the future, with some considering transferring or deferring their enrollment.
The potential ban has drawn attention due to its impact on high-profile students, including Cleo Carney, daughter of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, heir to the Belgian throne. Both are currently enrolled at Harvard.
President Trump criticized Harvard on social media after the initial temporary restraining order was issued, asserting that the government would ultimately “WIN!” The administration is reportedly demanding changes to Harvard’s governance to align with the president’s vision, accusing the university of being a liberal haven and failing to adequately protect Jewish students from harassment. Harvard, however, has rejected these demands, framing them as political interference in its autonomy. The legal battle is ongoing.
