Thu May 29 08:32:22 UTC 2025: ## Desperate Gazans Storm Aid Warehouse, Two Dead Amidst Famine Warnings

**Deir el-Balah, Gaza Strip** – The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a dire warning, reiterating its call for a massive increase in aid to Gaza, as desperation and hunger reach critical levels. At least two people have died and several were injured after crowds of hungry Palestinians broke into a United Nations aid warehouse in central Gaza, seeking vital food supplies.

The incident occurred at the al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir el-Balah, where “hordes of hungry people” overwhelmed the facility in a desperate attempt to secure food, according to the WFP. “Initial reports indicate two people died and several were injured in the tragic incident,” the WFP said in a statement. The organization is still confirming the details.

“Gaza needs an immediate scale-up of food assistance,” the WFP emphasized. “This is the only way to reassure people that they will not starve. WFP urgently calls for safe, unimpeded humanitarian access to enable orderly food distribution across Gaza immediately.”

While Israel has allowed limited aid deliveries to Gaza following international pressure, aid organizations insist the amount is woefully insufficient to address the widespread hunger and looming famine. Sigrid Kaag, the UN’s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, described the current aid level as “comparable to a lifeboat after the ship has sunk.”

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, stated the country would continue allowing aid deliveries via the UN and the privately-run Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). He urged the UN to cooperate with the GHF, but the UN and other aid groups have voiced serious concerns about the foundation’s impartiality and methods.

Jonathan Whittall, a senior UN aid official, criticized the GHF’s operation as “surveillance-based rationing” that legitimizes a policy of deprivation and accused Israel of using aid as a tool to depopulate areas of Gaza. The UN has refused to participate in the GHF scheme.

Adding to the tragedy, at least 10 Palestinians were reportedly killed this week when Israeli forces opened fire on crowds seeking aid at the GHF site. The foundation claims to have distributed the equivalent of over 840,000 meals in recent days.

Meanwhile, Israeli attacks continue to claim lives across Gaza. Medical sources report at least 30 people were killed on Thursday, including seven sheltering at a kindergarten in Jabalia. The Gaza Ministry of Health also reported 19 deaths in attacks on residential buildings in the Bureij refugee camp.

The escalating crisis underscores the desperate need for a significant increase in humanitarian aid and a lasting ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population in Gaza.
