**TIRUNELVELI, May 29, 2025** – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a new drinking water scheme worth ₹45.10 crore for Palayamkottai union, Tirunelveli district, on Thursday. The project will provide clean drinking water to 41 rural habitations in the region, benefiting thousands of residents.

The inauguration ceremony, held virtually by the Chief Minister, was followed by a formal dedication to the public at Palayam Chettikulam. Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu, District Collector R. Sukumar, and Nanguneri MLA Ruby R. Manoharan symbolically opened a water tap to mark the occasion.

The scheme utilizes six infiltration wells sunk in the Tamirabharani River at Thirumalaikozhunthupuram. Water is then pumped to nine ground-level sumps and distributed through a 159.15 km network of pipes to 62 overhead tanks.

The project is designed to meet the growing needs of the population, projecting demand until 2054. Currently supplying 2.60 million litres of water daily to 33,240 people, the scheme will eventually provide 4.06 million litres per day, ensuring each beneficiary receives 55 litres of water.

Speaker M. Appavu also announced that two larger drinking water projects, costing ₹605.75 crore and ₹423.13 crore respectively, aimed at serving numerous habitations and municipalities in the district, are on track for completion by the end of the year.
