Wed May 28 01:00:47 UTC 2025: **SpaceX’s Starship Suffers “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly” in Latest Test Flight**

**Boca Chica, Texas -** SpaceX’s ninth Starship test flight ended prematurely on Wednesday when the uncrewed mega-rocket suffered a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” or explosion, approximately 30 minutes after launching from its Texas facility. The incident occurred after a fuel leak triggered uncontrollable spinning during re-entry, causing the vehicle to break apart.

While the test ultimately failed, SpaceX highlighted the value of the data collected. “With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s test will help us improve Starship’s reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multiplanetary,” the company stated on social media.

The flight did manage to surpass the performance of previous test launches, which had ended in earlier explosions. This follows a similar incident on March 6th, where a Starship exploded shortly after takeoff, prompting the FAA to temporarily halt departures at several Florida airports due to falling debris.

Starship is central to Elon Musk’s ambitious plans to colonize Mars and to assist NASA in returning humans to the moon.

These frequent test flight failures have raised concerns about debris impacts. In anticipation of this launch, the FAA nearly doubled the airspace closure zone to 1,600 nautical miles east of the launch site. Coordination with authorities in the United Kingdom, Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Cuba was also necessary.

Despite the ongoing setbacks, the FAA recently approved an increase in annual launches from the site from five to 25. Conservation groups have expressed objections.

Musk’s growing influence within President Trump’s second administration, coupled with his company’s reliance on federal regulatory approvals, has also drawn scrutiny. In March, the Campaign Legal Center (CLC) filed an ethics complaint regarding potential conflicts of interest between the FAA and Musk’s Starlink satellite communications network.
