Tue May 27 18:20:06 UTC 2025: ## Sharavathi Project Faces Opposition Over Environmental Concerns
**Bengaluru, May 27, 2025** – A proposed hydroelectric power project in Karnataka’s Sharavathi Valley is facing scrutiny over its potential environmental impact, particularly on the endangered Lion Tailed Macaque (LTM) population.
The Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project, spearheaded by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), seeks to divert 54.155 hectares of forestland in Sagar and Honnavar taluks for construction. However, a recent site inspection report conducted by Deputy Inspector-General of Forest (DIGF) Praneetha Paul, from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India (MoEF&CC), has advised against the project.
The report cites numerous reasons for its disapproval, including the proposed felling of over 15,000 trees, many endemic to the Western Ghats, and the destruction of vital habitat for the LTM. The report argues that the project will fragment the LTM population, potentially leading to its extinction. The proposed compensatory afforestation land, a shola grassland, is deemed unsuitable to replace the lost forest habitat.
While acknowledging the ecological concerns, S. Senthil Kumar, Deputy Director-General of Forests (Central) Regional Office, MoEF&CC, has recommended the proposal, suggesting revisions to minimize tree felling and protect the area’s ecological integrity. He notes the project’s dependence on existing reservoirs and gravity for hydroelectricity production, limiting alternative alignments. He also mentioned the wildlife warden requested the project incorporate underground structures and tunnels to reduce tree felling.
The conflicting recommendations highlight the tension between Karnataka’s energy needs and the preservation of its rich biodiversity. The final decision on the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project remains pending.
