Wed May 28 10:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Musetti Cruises into Roland Garros Second Round, Eyes “King of Clay” Crown

**Paris, France -** Italian sensation Lorenzo Musetti showcased his clay-court prowess on Sunday, dispatching German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 7-5, 6-2, 6-0 in the first men’s singles match of the Roland Garros tournament on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The victory marks Musetti’s 15th clay-court win of the season, placing him second only to Francisco Cerundolo in the win column on the surface this year.

The eighth seed displayed glimpses of brilliance, captivating the crowd with his signature backhand slice and breathtaking volleys. While Hanfmann initially challenged Musetti, the Italian raised his level in the crucial moments, securing the first set and dominating the remainder of the match. Musetti’s serve proved instrumental, landing 46 of 70 first serves and winning an impressive 83% of those points. He also managed to not give Hanfmann any break points.

“This last month has been incredible, I’ve reached many of my goals,” said Musetti, brimming with confidence after his victory. He has good reason to be confident, as he is the only man to reach the semi-finals of all three Masters 1000 events on clay this season. “The best is yet to come. I think I managed to find a way to ‘click,’ that I needed to make a step forward in the ranking and in my level. I’m here to show it.”

Musetti entered the tournament with bold ambitions, stating, “I go here with ambition to go forward and to try to lift the trophy. That’s I think the mentality that a top player has to be, needs to have.” This ambition is fueled by a stellar clay-court season, highlighted by a final appearance in Monte-Carlo and semi-final runs in Madrid and Rome, propelling him into the top 10 for the first time.

Adding to the significance of the day, Musetti’s match preceded the emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal, the “King of Clay,” who is widely expected to retire at the end of the year. Musetti expressed his admiration for Nadal, describing him as a “warrior” and an “inspiration” to him, as well as tennis fans everywhere. “He represents everything that tennis means to me,” Musetti said.

Musetti will look to continue his impressive run as he continues his Roland Garros campaign.
