Wed May 28 12:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Perth Zoo Celebrates World Otter Day with Charismatic Duo Sati and Squid

**Perth, Australia -** Perth Zoo is celebrating World Otter Day by highlighting their beloved Asian Small-clawed Otters, Sati and Squid. These energetic and curious residents of the Asian Rainforest exhibit are a favourite among zoo visitors.

Asian Small-clawed Otters are the smallest otter species in the world, growing up to 60cm and weighing around 4.5kg. Despite their size, they boast big appetites, consuming about 1kg of fish, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms daily. Keepers at Perth Zoo use creative feeding methods as enrichment for the otters.

“Enrichment is a huge part of daily life for Sati and Squid,” a Zoo spokesperson explained. “Keepers hide food by scattering treats around their habitat. This keeps the otters mentally sharp and encourages natural behaviours like foraging.”

Otters are highly communicative animals, using a variety of vocalisations to interact. Sati and Squid have at least 12 different calls to greet each other, warn of danger, or just say hello. They also mark their territory using scent glands, leaving behind “spraint” to signal their presence. Asian Small-clawed Otters are monogamous, often pairing for life and raising their pups together.

However, all 13 otter species face threats from habitat destruction due to pollution, urban development, and agriculture, particularly unsustainable palm oil production.

Perth Zoo encourages visitors to learn more about these fascinating creatures and how to help protect them. You can see them for yourself at the daily otter talk and feed at 12:15pm.

“Every small action helps protect otters and their rainforest homes,” the spokesperson added.

The Zoo also offers behind-the-scenes “Close Encounters” experiences. Donations to Perth Zoo directly support their vital work in saving threatened wildlife.
