Mon May 26 17:51:10 UTC 2025: ## Volvo to Cut 3,000 Jobs Amid Tariff Uncertainty and Restructuring
**Gothenburg, Sweden** – Swedish automaker Volvo Cars announced plans on Monday to cut 3,000 white-collar jobs globally as part of a major restructuring initiative aimed at reducing costs and improving the company’s financial performance. The move comes amidst rising concerns over potential tariffs and a volatile global automotive market.
The layoffs, representing approximately 15% of Volvo’s office staff, are expected to impact nearly all departments, including research and development, communication, and human resources. Most of the redundancies will occur in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the company is headquartered.
Volvo is aiming to slash costs by $1.9 billion (18 billion Swedish crowns) as part of a program unveiled in April by CEO Hakan Samuelsson. The company expects a one-time restructuring cost of $160 million (1.5 billion crowns) associated with the layoffs.
The announcement follows closely on the heels of US President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose 50% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union. While Trump has since extended the deadline for potential tariff implementation to July 9 to allow for further negotiations with Brussels, the uncertainty has already impacted Volvo’s business strategy.
Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson has stated that the tariffs could make it impossible to export the EX30 EV, manufactured in Belgium, to the United States, according to Reuters news agency. Given the automaker’s significant production footprint in Europe and China, Volvo is particularly vulnerable to the effects of new tariffs.
The company has withdrawn its financial guidance, citing unpredictable markets, weakened consumer confidence, and trade tariffs as contributing factors to the turmoil in the global automotive industry. Volvo aims to finalize its new structural setup by the third quarter of this year. The company hopes the restructuring plan will revitalize its share price and improve demand for its vehicles.
