**”S.W.A.T.” Lives On: Sony Revives Franchise with “S.W.A.T. Exiles”**
LOS ANGELES, CA – May 19, 2024 – Just days after its series finale on CBS, “S.W.A.T.” is getting a new lease on life with the announcement of a spin-off series, “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” Sony Pictures Television, undeterred by previous cancellations of the original series, is moving forward independently with the 10-episode sequel, even without a distribution deal in place.
Shemar Moore will reprise his iconic role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. The new series sees Hondo pulled out of forced retirement to lead an experimental SWAT unit comprised of young, untested recruits. He must bridge generational gaps and mold this group of outsiders into a cohesive team, all while protecting the city and the program that made him who he is.
Sony plans to shop “S.W.A.T. Exiles” to streamers, broadcast networks, and cable channels, including CBS, Paramount+, and Netflix, the last of which currently hosts the “S.W.A.T.” library. The studio hopes to recapture the original show’s global fanbase and attract new viewers.
“S.W.A.T. Exiles” will preserve jobs for the 200-person local production crew who contributed to the original series’ success. Production is slated to begin this summer in Los Angeles.
Jason Ning (“Lucifer,” “The Brothers Sun”) joins as executive producer and showrunner. Shemar Moore, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and James Scura also serve as executive producers.
Moore expressed his excitement: “My eight seasons on ‘S.W.A.T.’ have been epic and memorable. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T.”
Sony Pictures TV executives emphasized their commitment to producing high-quality content and enhancing the value of key intellectual property. Ning called it “an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love.”
