**Monsoon Fury: Heavy Rains Disrupt Life Across India**
**May 27, 2025** – Torrential monsoon rains are wreaking havoc across several states in India, causing flooding, landslides, and disrupting daily life. Kerala, Karnataka, and Mumbai are among the worst-hit regions.
In Kerala, intense monsoon conditions have claimed four lives, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. Many houses in the coastal area of Chellanam, Ernakulam district, were flooded due to sea erosion. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode districts, and an orange alert for most other districts, warning of heavy rains. While extreme rainfall isn’t expected, the alerts account for the cumulative impact of previous days’ downpours.
Coastal Karnataka remains under a red alert for the next five days. Heavy rains in Kodagu district led to one fatality after a tree collapsed. Landslides along the Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway 75 in Hassan district have severely impacted vehicular movement, causing significant delays.
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Monday, marking the onset of the monsoon. South Mumbai recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with over 250 mm in just 13 hours. While the rains eased slightly on Tuesday morning, the IMD forecasts generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainfall to continue. Transportation services were disrupted due to waterlogging in several areas, including a metro station and a major hospital.
In Himachal Pradesh, the local meteorological station has issued an orange alert for thunderstorm, lightning, and hail in several districts on May 27 and 28.
Authorities are urging caution. Chikkamagaluru Police in Karnataka have issued an advisory to tourists and locals, warning them to be extra careful near water bodies and to avoid waterfalls and areas receiving heavy rains. The public urged to avoid beaches in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala following high wave alerts.
The IMD reports that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, which is expected to strengthen the flow of monsoon winds.
