**Congress Accuses Madhya Pradesh of Becoming ‘Rape Capital’ Following Tribal Woman’s Death**
**Bhopal, India – May 27, 2025** – The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh, following the death of a 45-year-old tribal woman who was allegedly brutally gang-raped in the Khandwa district. Adivasi Congress president Vikrant Bhuria has termed the incident the “Adivasi Nirbhaya case,” drawing parallels to the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape.
During a press conference in New Delhi, Mr. Bhuria, an MLA from Jhabua, accused Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the Home portfolio, of failing to maintain law and order. He claimed that rape cases in the state have increased by 18% since Mr. Yadav assumed responsibility for the Home Department, with 26% of victims being from the tribal community.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on May 23 in Eitwa village, Khandwa, after the victim attended a wedding. Two neighbors, identified as Hari Palvi and Sunil Korku, have been arrested. Police allege the victim was returning from the wedding with the two accused, when Palvi took them to his house, where the crime occurred. Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Rai stated that the brutality of the attack led to severe internal injuries, though investigators have not yet confirmed what objects, if any, were inserted.
Mr. Bhuria criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Bhopal for a women’s conference, urging him to address the state’s growing crime rate against women. He also slammed the government’s liquor policy, alleging a lack of control over the “liquor mafia.”
“Madhya Pradesh is becoming a rape capital and liquor capital,” Mr. Bhuria stated. He also described the horror experienced by the victim’s family, including her 16-year-old daughter.
SP Rai stated that he has issued orders for a fast-tracked investigation with special monitoring of the case.
The incident follows a similar case in April, where three minor girls and a woman from the tribal community were allegedly gang-raped in Balaghat district.
