**’Dawson’s Creek’ Revival Almost Happened, Creator Kevin Williamson Reveals**
Wilmington, NC – For fans still yearning for a return to Capeside, there’s a bittersweet revelation: a “Dawson’s Creek” revival was nearly a reality. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider on the set of his new Netflix drama “The Waterfront,” series creator Kevin Williamson revealed that serious discussions about resurrecting the beloved teen drama took place during the height of the TV reboot craze following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I thought ‘Dawson’s Creek’ was behind me and in the past, but they desperately kept trying to get me to go back to it when there was that reboot craze,” Williamson said. “They kept trying and trying to get me, trying to get James, trying to get Katie, and get us all involved.”
According to Williamson, the original cast – including James Van Der Beek (Dawson), Joshua Jackson (Pacey), and Katie Holmes (Joey) – were all open to the idea at different times. However, scheduling conflicts ultimately proved insurmountable. “James wanted to do it, but then Josh was busy,” Williamson explained. “Katie wanted to do it, then James was busy. No one could come to terms at the same time to put it together.”
Beyond the logistical challenges, the scheduling gridlock sparked a larger discussion about whether revisiting the show was truly the right move. Williamson explains that while the cast was excited for the prospect of bringing the show back, they soon realized that the finale was complete and that bringing it back wouldn’t do the show justice.
“We kind of just went, ‘We did it and it was good,’” Williamson explains. “And what would it be today? We did the finale, we felt it was complete, we did five years in the future. You could definitely do a story about the children of [these characters] if you wanted to. You could maybe even do a This Is Us sort of thing. But ultimately, we felt like maybe it could live again in another way, but not as a reboot.”
With Van Der Beek, Jackson, and Holmes all deeply involved in other projects, and Williamson himself juggling “Scream 7” and “The Waterfront,” a “Dawson’s Creek” reunion appears unlikely in the near future.
Williamson will premiere “The Waterfront,” a series infused with personal elements similar to “Dawson’s Creek,” at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, on May 29th.
