**MANGALURU, May 27, 2025** – Coastal Karnataka is experiencing unusually heavy rainfall, with cumulative rainfall reaching “large excess” levels between March 1st and May 26th, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). The region, encompassing Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, has recorded 456 mm of rainfall, a significant departure from the normal 119 mm for this period – a staggering 284% increase.
This deluge has affected communities, as exemplified by water entering a house in Kukkundur village, Karkala taluk, Udupi district. The KSNDMC defines a rainfall departure of 60% or more as “large excess.”
Other regions in Karnataka are also experiencing significantly higher-than-average rainfall. North Interior Karnataka recorded a 140% departure from normal, while the Malnad region saw a 123% increase, and South Interior Karnataka a 74% rise.
