**Alexis Bledel Reveals Immediate Connection to “Handmaid’s Tale” Character Emily, Reflects on Departure**

In a rare interview, actress Alexis Bledel has opened up about her role as Emily Malek in Hulu’s critically acclaimed dystopian drama, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Bledel, who left the show after its fourth season, revealed that she was immediately captivated by the character of Emily, despite the harrowing experiences she would endure.

“I was actually offered the role [of Emily/Ofglen],” Bledel told The Hollywood Reporter. “And when I read the pilot script I immediately said yes. Somehow, Bruce [Miller, the show’s creator] just knew I had Ofglen in me.”

Bledel’s character faced a series of brutal trials throughout the series, including a forced clitoridectomy, committing murder, and being exiled to the radioactive Colonies. Despite the darkness of the role, Bledel saw the potential in Emily’s journey from the beginning. “It was deeply upsetting to even imagine Emily going through something like that – being captured, powerless, with no say over her body,” she said.

The actress, who won an Emmy in 2017 for her performance on the show, discussed her character’s backstory with showrunner Bruce Miller prior to filming. Bledel stated that her character’s previous life as a cellular biology professor deeply influenced Emily’s worldview.

While “The Handmaid’s Tale” concludes its sixth and final season on May 27th, Bledel’s journey on the show ended after season four. She announced her departure in 2022, stating, “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast, and crew for their support.”

In the season five premiere, it was revealed that Emily had left her family in Canada to return to Gilead and continue the fight against the oppressive regime.

Bledel, who recently divorced from actor Vincent Kartheiser, has taken a break from acting since her departure from the series.
