**Alappuzha, India – May 26, 2025** – Two people have died in Alappuzha district, Kerala, as a result of severe weather conditions. Heavy rainfall and strong winds that have battered the region for three consecutive days have also caused widespread damage to property.
Tragedy struck at Alappuzha beach when an 18-year-old woman, identified as Nithya from Pallathuruthy, was killed after a wayside eatery collapsed on her during heavy rain. She had been seeking shelter with a friend, who sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized. In a separate incident, a man named Omanakuttan drowned in a waterbody in Kainakary, Kuttanad.
The relentless weather has also wreaked havoc on infrastructure. Ten houses were completely destroyed, and another 112 were damaged across the district. The worst-affected areas include Amabalappuzha, Chengannur, Cherthala, Kuttanad, and Karthikappally. Traffic was disrupted on the Ambalappuzha-Thiruvalla road due to fallen tree branches. Residents living along the coast are on high alert as strong waves continue to batter the shoreline.
