**Telangana Schools Enlist Students to Manage Messes After Food Quality Concerns**

**HYDERABAD, May 26, 2025** – In a proactive move to address concerns over food quality and management, the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) is empowering students to oversee the operations of messes in government-run hostels. The initiative, set to launch in the 2025-26 academic year, comes after a string of incidents raised questions about the quality of food served in these institutions.

Under the new program, students from Classes 8 through 11 will rotate monthly through key roles, including diet manager, mess monitor, and hygiene monitor. As diet managers, Class 10 students will be responsible for checking the quality and quantity of ingredients delivered to the kitchen. Mess monitors, from Classes 8 and 9, will ensure that cooking and help staff are present and that the cooking area and vessels are clean. Hygiene monitors, from Class 11, will oversee the kitchen, dining area, and waste management practices. Each student will only be tasked with these duties for one hour a day while serving.

TGSWREIS Secretary V.S. Alagu Varshini emphasized that the program is designed to nurture future leaders. “This isn’t just about food management; it’s about nurturing real-world leadership,” she stated. “Our students are learning to manage systems, lead teams, and uphold standards.”

The initiative follows increased scrutiny of food safety in Telangana’s educational institutions, with recent reports highlighting instances of unhygienic food and potential mismanagement. Earlier reports detail that the Telangana government has formed a task force to investigate the issues and has indicated it is willing to dismiss anyone found guilty of suppyling unhygienic food.
