Mon May 26 07:50:00 UTC 2025: **Reliance’s Shein India App Struggles to Gain Traction Amidst E-Commerce Competition**

**Mumbai, India** – Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Retail’s partnership with fast-fashion giant Shein faces challenges in penetrating the competitive Indian e-commerce market. The Shein India app, launched in February, experienced a significant drop in downloads, from 50,000 a day to just over 3,000 in early April, according to AppMagic data.

Reliance Retail reintroduced Shein to India five years after the original app was banned due to border tensions with China. This iteration operates differently, with Shein acting as a technology partner while Reliance handles sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, and consumer data management.

Analysts believe Reliance aims to leverage Shein’s AI-powered trendspotting and automated inventory systems to capture a significant share of India’s e-commerce market, projected to reach $345 billion by 2030. The company hopes to utilize its vast customer data from Jio telecom, JioMart, and its news and entertainment platforms to predict best-selling products and optimize pricing.

However, the Shein India app has faced criticism for higher prices and limited product options compared to Shein’s global platform. As of late April, it offered only 12,000 products, far fewer than the 600,000 available on the global platform.

Reliance Retail’s overall growth has slowed, with sales rising just 7.9% in the fiscal year ending March 2025, compared to 17.8% the previous year. Meanwhile, competitor Tata Group’s retail and fashion arm, Trent, has seen a surge in shares.

The partnership with Shein is part of a broader strategy for Reliance to overhaul its retail business and tap into India’s large Gen Z population, whose spending power is expected to exceed $2 trillion by 2035. Reliance is sourcing products locally through a network of small and midsize manufacturers and aims to eventually manufacture for global markets.

Industry experts note that the Indian market has evolved since Shein’s initial ban, with increased competition and evolving consumer preferences. It remains to be seen whether the Reliance-Shein partnership can deliver on its promise of a wide range of products and fast-fashion trends.
