Mon May 26 11:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Shelton Survives Five-Set Thriller as French Open 2025 Gets Underway

**Paris, France** – American tennis star Ben Shelton battled through a grueling five-set match against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego to secure his place in the second round of the 2025 French Open. Playing under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Shelton ultimately triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a match that stretched late into the Parisian night.

“To get a win in the fashion that I did in five sets late at night is a dream come true,” Shelton said in an on-court interview.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Sonego appearing to gain momentum in the second and third sets. However, Shelton, fueled by powerful forehands and impressive athleticism, mounted a comeback, winning the fourth set decisively and ultimately clinching the victory in the fifth.

The opening day of the tournament also saw No. 1 women’s seed Aryna Sabalenka, last year’s finalist Jasmine Paolini, and Americans Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul advance to the next round.

In other action, Portugal’s Nuno Borges defeated French hope Kyrian Jacquet in a five-set battle on Court 6.

Looking ahead, the order of play for tomorrow includes Jannik Sinner’s first-round match, scheduled for the evening session on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The winner of Shelton’s match will face either Hugo Gaston or Ugo Blanchet, guaranteeing a French player in the next round.
