**Los Angeles, CA** – In a dramatic turning point for the sixth and final season of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the penultimate episode, titled “Execution,” saw the shocking deaths of three influential Gilead Commanders: Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), and Gabriel Wharton (Josh Charles).

The episode, written by co-showrunner Eric Tuchman and directed by series star Elisabeth Moss, depicts Lawrence’s plan to detonate a plane carrying High Commanders, a plan Nick ultimately joins, sacrificing himself to cripple Gilead’s leadership.

“We decided on Nick and Lawrence’s deaths when we were first breaking the season,” Tuchman revealed. “Once we decided on Nick’s betrayal midway, that led to his fate.”

The deaths follow a near-execution of key female characters, including June (Elisabeth Moss), Aunt Lydia, Moira, and Janine, highlighting the ongoing resistance against Gilead and the sacrifices made in the fight for freedom.

Moss, who also directed the episode, said, “If Nick and Lawrence are going to go, it has to be me.”

The episode marks a significant shift in the narrative, forcing June to confront the complex legacy of her relationship with Nick and the ultimate futility of finding “good” men within the oppressive regime of Gilead.

“There is no such thing as a good Gilead Commander,” said co-showrunner Yahlin Chang. “If you’re a man who is powerful in Gilead, it means you are touched by some of that Gilead corruption.”

The shocking episode has sparked discussions among fans about the implications for the series finale and the future of the resistance. The Handmaid’s Tale finale is streaming now on Hulu.
