**Los Angeles, CA -** A24’s new black comedy, “Friendship,” starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, is hitting theaters nationwide, and the film’s director, Andrew DeYoung, reveals the project’s surprising origins and its connection to Rudd’s past roles.

DeYoung, known for his television comedy work, makes his feature directorial debut with this film about Craig Waterman (Robinson), a man desperate to forge a friendship with his weatherman neighbor, Austin Carmichael (Rudd). When a casual boxing match goes awry, Craig’s attempts to repair the relationship escalate into increasingly bizarre acts.

The director admits the script was inspired by his own experience trying to make new friends as an adult. “It was less of a breakup and more of a desire to hang out with a person that wasn’t received in the way I wanted it to be,” DeYoung told The Hollywood Reporter. “I caught myself getting pissed off that the person didn’t respond to me… I then thought my reaction was pretty pathetic, and I was like, ‘Oh, this could make a good comedy.'”

The film draws parallels to other movies featuring Rudd, including “I Love You, Man” where Rudd played a similar role in finding friendships. Adding to the coincidence, Rudd’s character in “Friendship” is a local newsman, a nod to his iconic Brian Fantana character in “Anchorman.” In fact, the character in Friendship was originally named Brian too, but Rudd requested a change to avoid confusion.

DeYoung shared the film premiered at TIFF, and audiences laughed collectively during its screening. According to DeYoung, laughing in a room with a bunch of strangers is a beautiful and necessary experience.
