**Early Monsoon Wreaks Havoc in Kanyakumari; Orange Alert Issued**
KANNIYAKUMARI, May 25, 2025 – An early arrival of the southwest monsoon has caused significant damage in Kanyakumari district, prompting authorities to issue an orange alert and initiate damage prevention measures. Collector R. Alagumeena inspected affected villages in Thazhakudi and Gnalam on Sunday, assessing the impact of the heavy rains and strong winds that battered the region on May 23 and 24.
The severe weather has resulted in widespread damage, including uprooted trees, damaged electricity poles leading to power outages, and damage to the roofs of numerous tiled houses. The Fire and Rescue Services are working to clear fallen trees, while the electricity board is focused on repairing and replacing damaged poles.
A comprehensive survey is underway to assess the damage to agricultural lands, particularly banana plantations, and residential properties. Initial reports indicate that approximately 7.5 hectares of crops, including banana and rubber, have been affected. Relief measures are being planned for impacted farmers.
According to the Collector, a total of 22 houses in Vilavancode and Thiruvattar taluks have sustained damage. While 49 trees were uprooted across the district, most have been cleared. Of the 170 damaged electric poles, 140 have already been replaced, with ongoing efforts to restore the remaining ones. The district administration is committed to providing appropriate crop damage relief to the affected farmers.
