Sun May 25 12:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Agarkar Defends Sai Sudharsan’s Test Call-Up, Signals Bold New Era for Indian Cricket

**London, England** – The Indian cricket team’s upcoming tour of England has been met with excitement and intrigue, fueled by some surprising selections by the national selectors. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has defended the inclusion of Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudharsan, emphasizing that his selection was not solely based on his impressive IPL form.

“We have known him as a terrific red-ball player,” Agarkar stated, addressing concerns about Sudharsan’s first-class record. “He has shown the right temperament and seems to have the game to succeed at the top level.” While acknowledging Sudharsan’s dominant performance in the IPL, where he currently leads the Orange Cap race, Agarkar insisted that his red-ball capabilities were the primary reason for his call-up.

Sudharsan’s first-class average stands at 39.93, with glimpses of brilliance including a century against Australia A and another in the County Championship. However, his red-ball consistency hasn’t matched his white-ball exploits.

Alongside Sudharsan, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh also received his maiden Test call-up. This selection highlights the selectors’ focus on finding a bowler with the ability to seam and swing the ball, a crucial asset in English conditions.

The inclusion of veterans like Karun Nair also points toward a willingness to gamble on experience, even as the team transitions into a new era potentially led by Shubman Gill.

Agarkar hinted at a long-term vision, stating, “We are looking at all sorts of scenarios over the next two years. What is going to help build a team leading up to that WTC final.”

Former Indian cricketer Kiran More echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for patience with the new selections. “You have to punt on some players, you need to give them some time,” he said, suggesting a minimum of 10 Tests to allow players like Sudharsan, Nair, Arshdeep, and Easwaran to mature.

The biggest surprise of the announcement was the elevation of Shubman Gill as captain, ahead of experienced players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. Agarkar explained the choice of Gill and naming Pant as vice captain by saying, “We are obviously looking at guys who can take the team forward over the next few years. And at the moment, these two are the guys that we feel can do that.”

These bold selections signal a shift in approach by the Indian selectors, prioritizing potential and willingness to take risks as they build a team for the future. All eyes will be on England as the new-look squad takes on the challenge of Test cricket in demanding conditions.
