Fri May 23 19:50:00 UTC 2025: **Florida State Softball Coach Lonni Alameda Battles Cancer with Unwavering Support**

**Tallahassee, FL** – Florida State University’s decorated softball coach, Lonni Alameda, is facing her toughest opponent yet: Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer. Diagnosed in late February, Alameda has begun chemotherapy while continuing to lead her team towards their goal of another Women’s College World Series appearance.

Alameda’s journey began with a seemingly minor knee injury and a subsequent burning sensation that led to the discovery of a mass. Despite the daunting diagnosis, Alameda remains steadfast in her commitment to her team, echoing her own mantra: “10 toes down, I just have to be right here, right now.”

Her dedication has resonated deeply with her players, who are determined to give their best for their coach. “This is bigger than softball,” said sophomore shortstop Isa Torres. “It’s always for her.”

Alameda’s strength and openness have garnered an outpouring of support from the softball community and beyond. Other ACC coaches are wearing helmet stickers featuring a pink ribbon with a braid, a symbol of Alameda’s signature hairstyle. Locally, “Team Lonni” t-shirts are being sold to raise money for breast cancer research at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, a gesture Alameda plans to match.

She credits FSU women’s basketball coach Brooke Wyckoff, a fellow breast cancer survivor, for providing guidance and encouragement on how to manage coaching while undergoing treatment. Alameda also found solace in the discovery that her breast cancer will be treated with technology funded by a donation Wyckoff did in 2023.

Despite the challenges of chemotherapy and the side effects of experimental treatments, Alameda continues to coach and mentor her players, even shaving her head with her team in a moment of solidarity. Her unwavering spirit and the support surrounding her serve as an inspiration to the softball community and beyond.
