**Hisar, Haryana – May 24, 2025:** Jyoti Rani, a 34-year-old YouTube vlogger known for her travel videos, has been arrested by Hisar Police on charges of espionage. Rani, who runs the channel ‘Travel With JO’ with nearly 400,000 subscribers, faces allegations under the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police investigations were triggered by Rani’s popular videos filmed in Pakistan, including one documenting her trip from the Wagah Border to Panja Sahib. Her attendance at an Iftar party at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi also raised suspicions. Authorities suspect Rani was cultivated by Pakistani intelligence, lured by money and promises of a luxurious lifestyle.
“Her travels led investigation agencies to suspect that she was being groomed as an asset by intelligence operatives in Pakistan,” said Hisar Superintendent of Police, Shashank Kumar Sawan. Police are investigating whether Rani shared sensitive information, though they admit no direct evidence yet exists to support the claim. They are also exploring potential links between her visits and a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
The arrest has sparked a wider investigation, with Haryana authorities scrutinizing other social media channels for Pakistan-backed operatives. Concerns have been raised about the potential for influencers to shape public opinion and disseminate narratives counter to the Indian government’s stance.
Critics, including freelance journalist Mandeep Punia, argue that Rani is being unfairly targeted based on flimsy evidence. They suggest she is becoming a scapegoat in a broader trend of arresting individuals with past ties to Pakistan.
Rani’s family denies the allegations. Her father, Harish Kumar, claims he was unaware of his daughter’s online activities and travels. The case has ignited a debate about the responsibilities and potential vulnerabilities of social media influencers in the realm of national security. Rani’s police remand has been extended as investigations continue.
