**Venezuela: Opposition Figure Arrested on Terrorism Charges Ahead of Disputed Elections**

Caracas, Venezuela – A top Venezuelan opposition figure, Juan Pablo Guanipa, has been arrested on “terrorism” charges, sparking outrage and condemnation just days before controversial parliamentary elections. Guanipa, a close ally of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, was taken into custody on Friday, according to his social media account and state television reports.

Guanipa, who had been in hiding since the contested 2024 presidential election, released a pre-written statement accusing President Nicolas Maduro’s regime of human rights abuses and stifling dissent. He described his arrest as a “kidnapping” by the Maduro government.

The arrest comes amidst a crackdown on the opposition in the lead-up to weekend elections for the National Assembly and state-level positions. Opposition leaders, including Edmundo Gonzalez, who fled to exile in Spain after the 2024 election, have denounced the arrests as politically motivated and aimed at ensuring a predetermined outcome in the upcoming vote.

“Just hours before a farcical election with no guarantees of any kind, the regime has reactivated an operation of political repression,” Gonzalez stated online.

The United States has also condemned the arrest. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the “new wave of repression” and expressed concern over the detention of Guanipa and reportedly over 70 others.

The opposition has vowed to boycott the elections, claiming they are a ploy by Maduro to consolidate power. They point to the disputed 2024 presidential election, which saw Maduro declared the winner in a vote marred by accusations of fraud and a lack of transparency. Following that election, a government crackdown on protests resulted in numerous arrests and casualties.

“This is pure and simple STATE TERRORISM,” Machado, the opposition leader, said in response to Guanipa’s arrest.

The international community is closely watching the situation as concerns grow about the fairness and legitimacy of the upcoming elections. Opposition leaders are urging the world to recognize the elections as a sham designed to maintain Maduro’s grip on power.
