**Mongolian Government in Turmoil as Protests Demand Prime Minister’s Resignation**
**ULAANBAATAR, May 23, 2025** – Mongolia’s coalition government is on the brink of collapse as protests calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene enter their ninth day. The political crisis was triggered by reports of lavish spending by the Prime Minister’s son, igniting public anger over alleged government corruption.
The ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) has accused its coalition partner, the Democratic Party, of undermining the government after some of its lawmakers supported the protests. This led to a meeting of coalition leaders on Thursday to review their agreement, with the MPP ultimately deciding to expel the Democratic Party.
Democratic Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Gantumur Luvsannyam defended his party members, stating their views did not represent the party’s official stance.
The Prime Minister’s fate hangs in the balance ahead of a Parliament session scheduled for Friday. Oyun-Erdene, who has been in office for four years, has faced previous calls for his resignation, but has survived them.
The protesters, largely young Mongolians, express deep frustration with perceived corruption and wealth displays among the families of government officials. Ariunbileg Oyunbilegt, a mother of three, voiced her “disgust” at the perceived abuse of power, stating that the Prime Minister’s promises to fight corruption were “false and empty.”
