Thu May 22 19:41:04 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Israeli Attacks Escalate in Southern Lebanon Ahead of Elections, Raising Ceasefire Concerns

**Beirut, Lebanon** – Tensions are escalating in southern Lebanon as Israeli forces launched a series of attacks on Thursday, just days before crucial municipal elections are scheduled to take place in the region. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has condemned the strikes, calling on the international community to pressure Israel to adhere to the November ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.

The Israeli military confirmed targeting Hezbollah sites, claiming to have killed one fighter in the town of Rab el-Thalathine and striking a military site containing rocket launchers in the Bekaa Valley. The official National News Agency (NNA) reported that a building in Toul was struck and a shepherd was injured in a separate attack. The NNA described the Israeli actions as some of the heaviest since the ceasefire went into effect.

Prime Minister Salam’s office issued a statement highlighting the “dangerous” timing of the attacks, occurring as southern Lebanon prepares to vote in municipal elections on Saturday. These elections are widely expected to be dominated by Hezbollah and its allies.

“Prime Minister Salam stresses that these violations will not thwart the state’s commitment to holding the elections and protecting Lebanon and the Lebanese,” the statement read.

The November ceasefire agreement, based on a UN Security Council resolution, stipulated that Hezbollah fighters withdraw north of the Litani River and dismantle military infrastructure south of the demarcation line. In return, Israel was to withdraw all forces from Lebanon. However, Israel has maintained a troop presence in parts of southern Lebanon, citing “strategic” reasons. The resolution also calls for the disarmament of all non-state groups in southern Lebanon, with Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers designated as the sole bearers of arms.

While Hezbollah has yet to comment on the Israeli army’s claims, the recent escalation raises serious concerns about the fragile ceasefire and the safety of voters in the upcoming elections, particularly in border towns. The international community is closely watching the situation, with growing calls for de-escalation and a renewed commitment to the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
