**New Delhi, May 23, 2024** – Delhi-NCR residents experienced a welcome respite from the heat on Thursday following a night of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The change in weather brought relief after a period of high temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the likelihood of more thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next two days, Friday and Saturday. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius on Friday. Cloudy skies are predicted for May 25th and 26th, with a possibility of more thunderstorms on May 27th. Cloudy weather is expected on May 28th. Over the next five days, temperatures are expected to remain between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius.
Thursday’s maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 34.7 degrees Celsius, a significant drop of 6 degrees compared to Wednesday’s 40.7 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature settled at 20.8 degrees Celsius, which is 5.9 degrees below the normal average. Specific areas like Palam and Lodhi Road recorded highs of 33.8 degrees Celsius, while Ridge and Aya Nagar saw temperatures of 34.8 and 34.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The powerful storm that swept through Delhi-NCR on Wednesday night, accompanied by wind speeds of 79 kilometers per hour and hail, caused significant disruption. Tragically, three people lost their lives and 11 were injured. Uprooted trees and waterlogging led to traffic snarls across the capital.
The humidity level fluctuated between 69% and 51% during the day.
Air quality improved considerably after the storm. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 117 at 4 PM on Thursday, placing it in the “Moderate” category.
