**Red Alert Issued for Maharashtra Coast as Potential Cyclone Brews in Arabian Sea**
Mumbai, India – Coastal districts of Maharashtra are bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall as a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea intensifies, potentially developing into a cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several areas in western India until next week.
While no official cyclone warning has been issued as of yet, the IMD has warned of a possible intensification of the low-pressure area into a depression within the next 36 hours, with the possibility of further intensification thereafter. IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava told ANI that the storm could “intensify and move northwards” and “cause some more movement in the west coast”.
“A warning of extremely heavy rain has been issued in Konkan Goa for the next three days. A red alert has been issued here and heavy to very heavy rains may occur in the adjoining areas of Central Maharashtra and West Coast,” he added.
The IMD has also debunked claims of a cyclone forming near the Odisha-West Bengal coast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and the Konkan region for the next six to seven days, with a possibility of extremely heavy rain over Konkan and Goa between May 22nd and 24th, and coastal Karnataka on Saturday. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into specified areas of the Arabian Sea during this period.
