**Port Blair, May 23, 2025** – The airspace over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was temporarily closed for three hours today, May 23, for a high-altitude weapon test conducted by the Indian tri-services command. A similar closure is scheduled for tomorrow, May 24, during the same time frame (7:00 AM to 10:00 AM IST).
According to an official from the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), the closure, impacting a corridor length of approximately 500 km around the islands, was pre-planned and communicated through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on May 16. The NOTAM restricted civilian aircraft from flying over the region during the specified hours.
“We have successfully done a high-altitude weapon test today and tomorrow a similar test will be done,” the ANC official stated. “This is a routine practice here in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as we have done similar tests in the past also.”
The ANC is India’s only tri-services command and strategically important for the country’s national security. The temporary airspace closure underscores the ongoing defense activities and exercises conducted in the region.
