Wed May 21 23:45:04 UTC 2025: **Trump Administration Rescinds Police Reform Efforts, Sparking Outrage**
**Washington D.C.** – The Trump administration is rolling back federal oversight of local police departments, sparking outrage from civil rights leaders and police reform advocates. The Justice Department announced Wednesday it would cancel proposed settlements with Louisville, Kentucky, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, that would have mandated federal oversight of their police departments.
These settlements, known as consent decrees, are negotiated agreements enforced by a federal court, outlining steps and goals for reform. Additionally, the Justice Department is withdrawing reports on six other police departments that identified patterns of discrimination and excessive violence.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon defended the move as a shift towards local control, arguing that federal micromanagement of police is a waste of taxpayer funds and undermines local accountability.
Critics, including Reverend Al Sharpton, condemned the decision as a “moral retreat” that signals a lack of accountability for police misconduct, particularly against Black and Brown communities. This announcement comes shortly before the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, an event that triggered nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice.
The settlements stemmed from investigations launched under the Biden administration following Floyd’s murder and other high-profile deaths, such as Breonna Taylor. These investigations aimed to identify patterns of discriminatory policing. Despite the federal pullback, officials in Louisville and Minneapolis have vowed to continue with police reform efforts.
“We will comply with every sentence of every paragraph of the 169-page consent decree that we signed this year,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Paul Humphrey emphasized that the commitment to better policing goes beyond any settlement.
