**Panel Condemns India’s Treatment of Rohingya Refugees, Cites “Inhumane” Deportations**

**NEW DELHI -** A panel of human rights lawyers and social workers convened in New Delhi on Monday to address the ongoing plight of Rohingya refugees in India, days after the Supreme Court dismissed a petition against the government’s handling of the issue. The panel discussion, held at the Press Club of India, highlighted concerns about alleged deportations and the overall treatment of Rohingya refugees within the country.

The discussion was prompted by reports from Rohingya refugees in Delhi, who claim family members have been forcibly deported to a shore near the India-Myanmar border and left in international waters with only lifejackets.

Prominent figures like human rights lawyers Prashant Bhushan and Colin Gonsalves, along with social activist Harsh Mander, journalist Pamela Philipose, human rights activist Rita Manchanda and social worker Priyali Sur participated in the panel.

Mr. Bhushan presented case studies of families allegedly impacted by the deportations, labeling the process “inhumane” and a violation of both international and Indian constitutional law. He argued that deporting refugees to a country where they face potential genocide contradicts India’s constitutional values and international obligations.

Ms. Sur, who works with women survivors of war and conflict through the Azaadi Project, emphasized the need to examine the treatment of Rohingya refugees within India. She raised concerns about the community’s stigmatization, unwarranted detentions, separation of children from parents, and the “inhuman” conditions of detention centers.

The panel’s discussion shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding the status of Rohingya refugees in India, particularly the legality and ethics of the government’s approach. The event underscores the human rights concerns associated with the issue and the urgent need for a comprehensive and humane solution.
