**Vijayawada, May 20, 2025** – The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has issued a special bulletin forecasting heavy rainfall for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on May 20th and 21st. A yellow alert is in effect for the region.
The IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall in the districts of Tirupati, Chittoor, SPSR Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Sri Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Kurnool, and Nandyal on May 20th. For May 21st, the forecast calls for heavy rainfall in Anantapur, Annamayya, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Kurnool, and Nandyal districts.
Rain is expected to be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph. Thunderstorms are likely to continue throughout the state until May 23rd.
The IMD has advised residents to take precautions, including unplugging electrical appliances, avoiding shelter under trees or poles, staying away from water bodies, electric poles, and wires, and suspending farming operations.
The weather patterns are attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a trough running across the region.
While an orange alert was issued on Monday, actual rainfall remained light to moderate in most areas. As of 9 p.m. on Monday, Alluri Sitarama Raju district recorded the highest rainfall at 41mm, followed by Parvatipuram Manyam and Prakasam districts.
