Mon May 19 22:40:00 UTC 2025: ## News Article: India Remains Vigilant Despite Rise in COVID-19 Cases in Singapore and Hong Kong

**NEW DELHI – May 19, 2025 (The Hindu)** – India’s COVID-19 situation remains under control with only 257 active cases reported as of May 19th, according to sources within the Union Health Ministry. This announcement follows a review meeting with health experts from various organizations including the NCDC, EMR division, Disaster Management Cell, ICMR, and central government hospitals.

While the domestic situation remains stable, the Indian government is closely monitoring a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong.

“India has increased its vigilance after an increase in COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong in the last few weeks,” stated a source from the Health Ministry.

Preliminary information suggests that the majority of new cases in these regions are mild, with no unusual severity or mortality reported. The Health Ministry reassured the public that the current case numbers in India are very low given the country’s large population. “Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalisation required,” the source added.

India’s existing robust surveillance system for respiratory viral illnesses, implemented through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR, continues to monitor the situation. The Union Health Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to proactive monitoring and ensuring appropriate measures are in place to protect public health.
