Sun May 18 18:07:33 UTC 2025: **Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan Wins Romanian Presidential Election Amidst Controversy**
**Bucharest, Romania** – Centrist Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan has won the Romanian presidential election, securing over 5.83 million votes with nearly 99% of ballots counted, according to Reuters news agency. Dan, who campaigned on an anti-corruption platform and strong pro-EU and NATO stance, defeated hard-right nationalist George Simion in a runoff election held Sunday.
While exit polls initially indicated a victory for Dan with 54.9% of the vote, Simion immediately rejected the results, claiming his own internal counts showed him leading by 400,000 votes.
The election’s rerun followed the annulment of November’s presidential vote by the country’s top court, plunging Romania into a deep political crisis. Allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference, which Moscow has denied, plagued the previous election, in which far-right outsider Calin Georgescu topped the first-round polls.
Simion appeared alongside Georgescu at a Bucharest polling station on Sunday, stating that he voted against “humiliations” and “abuses” against Romanians. He proclaimed his vote was “for our future to be decided only by Romanians, for Romanians and Romania.”
Turnout was significantly higher in Sunday’s runoff, a factor believed to have played a critical role in Dan’s victory. Dan’s win is expected to bring a sense of stability to Romania after a period of political turmoil.
