The state’s average agricultural growth rate reached 5.66% during this period, a significant increase from the 1.36% recorded between 2012-13 and 2020-21.

The Tamil Nadu government credits this success to a series of proactive measures, including substantial investment in irrigation infrastructure. The area under irrigation expanded from 36.07 lakh hectares in 2020-21 to 38.33 lakh hectares in 2023-24, contributing to a corresponding rise in food production.

“Through five dedicated agriculture budgets, we have allocated a total of ₹1,94,076 crore to the sector,” the government stated in an official release. “We have introduced and implemented several new programmes aimed at boosting agricultural production and enhancing the welfare of our farming community.”

Improvements were also reported in the dairy and fisheries sectors. Milk production has increased from 8,362 metric tonnes in 2018-19 to 10,808 metric tonnes in 2023-24. In fisheries, 72 new fish landing centres have been established.
